See Your Dentist While Pregnant
You should see your dentist for a check-up and to get
your teeth cleaned during pregnancy. You should also have any treatment for
tooth decay or dental problems. Call your dentist immediately if you have pain
in your mouth or your gums are bleeding.
Dental X-Rays During Pregnancy
It is safe to have x-rays when you're pregnant, just
make sure to tell your dentist when you go to the office. Ask to wear a lead
apron over your abdomen and pelvis.
Gum Health While Pregnant
You may get gingivitis (gum swelling and bleeding)
during pregnancy. If your gums are bright and shiny, swollen, or bleed easy,
you should see a dentist. Gingivitis can lead to tooth loss and prenatal
problems. To prevent gingivitis you should do the following:
·
Brush two or three times a day.
·
Use a soft toothbrush.
·
Brush and floss before bedtime.
·
Eat healthy foods.
·
Eat foods high in vitamin C and folic acid.
Dental Health and Morning Sickness, Nausea and
Vomiting
Acids from the stomach can cause your teeth to be more
susceptible to abrasion when brushing. Make sure to rinse your mouth with water
repeatedly. Instead of brushing your teeth, use a fluoride rinse or chew a
sugarless gum immediately after vomiting.
